Background of the Study
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, have been facing significant challenges in accessing healthcare due to conflict, insecurity, and displacement. Borno State, located in the northeastern region of Nigeria, has experienced widespread violence and displacement, leading to large numbers of IDPs living in camps or informal settlements (Ibrahim et al., 2024). These IDPs face numerous barriers in accessing healthcare, including limited healthcare infrastructure, inadequate healthcare personnel, and the disruption of essential services. Nurses play a crucial role in providing primary healthcare services to IDPs, yet the challenges they face in delivering care in such settings are poorly understood.
This study will evaluate healthcare accessibility for IDPs in Borno State from a nursing perspective, aiming to identify the barriers that hinder access to care and assess how nurses are adapting to provide care in these challenging environments.
Statement of the Problem
Healthcare access for IDPs in Borno State is severely limited due to ongoing insecurity, the destruction of healthcare infrastructure, and the lack of essential resources. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, face numerous challenges in delivering care in displacement camps and informal settlements, including a lack of medical supplies, inadequate staffing, and poor working conditions. Despite these challenges, little research has been conducted to explore healthcare accessibility for IDPs from the perspective of nurses. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the unique challenges faced by nurses and the implications for IDP health outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the accessibility of healthcare services for IDPs in Borno State.
2. To identify the barriers that hinder healthcare access for IDPs, focusing on the role of nurses.
3. To propose strategies to improve healthcare delivery for IDPs in Borno State from a nursing perspective.
Research Questions
1. What factors limit healthcare accessibility for IDPs in Borno State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in providing care to IDPs in Borno State?
3. How can healthcare delivery for IDPs be improved from a nursing perspective?
Research Hypotheses
1. There are significant barriers that hinder healthcare accessibility for IDPs in Borno State.
2. Nurses face considerable challenges in providing healthcare services to IDPs, including resource shortages and inadequate infrastructure.
3. Interventions aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure and resources will enhance healthcare access and outcomes for IDPs in Borno State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on healthcare accessibility for IDPs in Borno State, particularly in camps and informal settlements. The research will be conducted from the perspective of nurses working in these settings. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing displaced populations due to security concerns and the challenge of obtaining comprehensive data in unstable environments. Additionally, the study will focus only on the role of nurses and may not fully capture the contributions of other healthcare professionals.
